Abstract: Methods for collecting student responses are as old as education itself: a raised hand, writing on a card, or a student coming to the blackboard. OpenPoll—www.openpoll.net—is a free and open-source solution for collecting, recording, and reporting student responses for formative assessment. OpenPoll is also simple—with less than 200 lines of code—yet provides similar functionality as other common clicker devices. It is a classroom response system that is created by faculty for students. Millions of students use classroom response systems. The technology is ubiquitous and simple; these apps should be freely available and open-source. OpenPoll is that solution.
