12B - Embracing Inclusion: The Effects of Identities and Cultures in Engaging Audiences in Astronomy

Abstract: In this interactive workshop conducted by the Planetary ReaCH project, we will deepen our understanding of culture and identity in audience engagement when communicating science. Through a virtual Circle of Trust activity, we will examine our identities and affinity biases as scientists and science educators in the field of astronomy and planetary science. We will then lean into our lived-experiences to hold small group conversations centered on cultural awareness and sensitivity, biases, race and colorism, and colonialism. As an entire group we will review and discuss these topics, including their impact on audience science engagement, and work towards tangible actions and strategies we can take to create inclusive environments for audiences and colleagues.
