4C-4 - Responsible Siting at the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration

Abstract: As part of the History, Philosophy, and Culture working group at the Next Generation Event Hoizon Telescope (ngEHT), the Responsible Siting group works to develop and implement best practices and ethical decision-making in the telescope site selection process. The motivation for this group draws from recent disciplinary reckonings with the environmentally and socially fraught history of astronomy in the U.S. and abroad. We consider the environmental, social, spiritual, aesthetic, and economic impact of proposed telescopes by interfacing with local stakeholders in pursuit of a more equitable set of siting practices. These practices include the development of educational opportunities in local communities, engagement with indigenous land stewards and local/regional environmental groups, and transparent planning. Of relevance to the conference is our focus on educational outreach, in particular our involvement with universities and grade schools to inspire future astronomers and enthusiasts to think critically about the roles of astronomy in society.
