Friends of the Marie Drake Planetarium
Juneau, Alaska, United States
My wife and I moved to Juneau, AK in 1998. In 2009 I retired from NOAA in Juneau. When not hiking, biking, skiing and kayaking we help run Juneau's Marie Drake Planetarium. It was built in 1967 employing a Spitz system. In 2019 our non-profit, Friends of the Marie Drake Planetarium, received grants to purchase a Digitalis system for our 30 foot dome.
My involvement with Planetariums started with Medford,OR Senior High School. I interned there with a Spitz Planetarium contained in a 30 foot dome. Between Medford and Juneau were: Vietnam, 6 years active Navy, world travel, B.S. Math, M.S. Math. DOD Civilian, NOAA Civilian.
My interest in Astronomy has been continuous. You master a subject when you teach it. I taught Astronomy as an adjunct at University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. Working as a NASA solar ambassador, this April 8, in Mazatlan Mexico, I witnessed my tenth total solar eclipse. NASA supplied me with huindreds of safe solar filters which I was honored to distribute free to locals in Mazatlan.
My plan is to present my experience of maintaining a weekly radio segment on Astronomy. KTOO, Juneau's public radio station, plays them. We will discuss
contacting your local radio station, finding a mentor, getting feedback, selecting content, finding a reviewer, hardware and software for audio and maintaining continuity. Discussing eclipses and the Northern lights is also on the agenda.
