Education and Engagement Senior Assistant Gemini International Observatory/NOIRLab Hilo, Hawaii, United States
Abstract: Journey Through the Universe promotes science education at Hawai‘i Island school districts inspiring students to explore STEM fields. By bringing astronomers and engineers into classrooms each year, students envision careers in STEM as these researchers celebrate the unique science happening in the local community. Journey endeavors to foster curiosity about our universe, and share cutting-edge research and technology that exists within one of the most diverse communities in the nation. During this session, attendees will learn about the extraordinary community partnerships with the educators & administrators of Hawaiʻi’s Department of Education, the researchers of the Maunakea Observatories, and dozens of partners in the community. Additionally, we will discuss resources provided to the astronomers to support NGSS learning. Participants will walk away with strategies to begin to foster similar relationships within their school districts and communities.
