Abstract: Scale Models of the Solar System are commonly constructed, either physically or virtually, and used to demonstrate the vast emptiness of space, the practical difficulties of space travel, and the need for scientific notation in astronomy. Places like museums and college campuses often have a version of a walkable model since putting both the sizes of planets and the sizes of their orbits on the same scale requires models at least hundreds of feet in size to keep even the major planets visible. Some of those models are custom made, while others are purchased at costs of tens of thousands of dollars or more. Seeking to build a model at low cost and low complexity, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay worked with an Eagle Scout to develop and install such a model as their service project. A few years, later we are beginning to share the resources we developed for free so that other organizations may replicate the model at low cost and with most of the planning and supplemental educational resources already done.
