Abstract: Barra de Potosí is a small village in the State of Guerrero at the Southwest Pacific in México. This 800 people village historically have been in an unprivileged situation. Poverty, delinquency, low educational opportunities. As a main fisherman village, educational and science world seems quite far away, since main concerns are around primary needs. As science and education are not primordial, options have to been looked and taken advantage of them.
The April 8th, 2024 Solar Eclipse was a perfect excuse to encourage people just to approach the science world and begin in astronomy. As part of ASP Eclipse Stars program and in collaboration with Whales of Guerrero, a non-profit organization that works with the community in ecological development and research of humpback whales in the area, I´ve designed an expedition to bring some kids, teens and adults to see and live the solar eclipse in Torreon, Coahuila; 750 miles away from the village, driving more than 35 hours and with a 10-session workshop related to the solar eclipse and astronomy for beginners for people just to connect them with science, nature and with the community itself looking forward to empower community to understand that science is not on labs or far away of them, and it can be useful in their daily life, in addition to motivating young people to study scientific careers. During the session, I’ll relate the procedures, all the ups and downs in the programs, results with the community and all what I’ve learned in the process as science communicator, teacher and person.
